| Purpose: Consecutive exotropia may happen many years after the primary operation for esotropia. We want to know if amblyopia, cycloplegic refraction status, surgical methods play any roles with the incidence of consecutive exotropia.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed charts of 45 patients who had operations for consecutive exotropia in our hospital. Age of onset, age of primary operation, interval between primary and secondary operations, preoperative and postoperative angle of deviation, surgical methods, cycloplegic refraction status, and amblyopia were recorded.
Results: We found that 51.1% of the patients had amblyopia. Amblyopia patients had larger mean deviation angle preoperatively and postoperatively. The mean duration that exotropia appeared after the first operation was 5.24 +/- 4.69 years. The mean interval between first and second operations was 13.14 +/- 7.98 years.
Conclusions: There was no significant difference between amblyopia and non-amblyopia patients in the development period of consecutive exotropia, pre-op & post-op deviation angle, and the interval between the 1st and 2nd operations. Unilateral medial rectus advancement and lateral rectus recession seemed to have higher successful rate than bilateral medial rectus advancement. Patients who received surgery for primary esotropia should be followed regularly. Consecutive exotropia may happen many years after.
